Workshops vs. Distance Learning?

Aloha! I am eager to get certified to be a doula, but I want to make the right choice regarding how to learn the material. I see that birtharts.com and childbirthinternational.com offer distance learning for ~$400 (does this cover the certification as well?). I'm also looking at DONA, where you pay a membership fee, certification fee and then I am guessing you pay for the class as well (can't find prices for this, wondering how much they are?). How did everyone here get certified? Is the distance learning really satisfying, or is it better to learn in person even though it only lasts a weekend?

Any advice appreciated :)
Namaste,
Masha

I did my Doula certification through childbirth international. Personally for me it was the best choice. The curriculum is very comprehensive and the support staff are very attentive. I felt like I was able to learn more in the time I did CBI than I would have in a weekend workshop.
The cost of the program is the complete cost, with no extras.

    ~ Aloha ~
I am currently working on my certification through birtharts. I participated in a workshop in February, and am working my way through the workbook and other reading. I'm on call for a birth right now (any day now <grin>). I can't wait to dance!
The distance program works well for me, I can take my time and my instructor is available to me by email should I have a question. There is so much material to cover, many books to read, and I like to digest the information slowly. The workshop was a great way to start the program. I highly recommend it. I actually found out about birtharts here on tribe. One of the founders is the moderator of the birth ecology tribe: tribes.tribe.net/birthecology
    here's a link to her website: www.maiahealingarts.com/birth-...-doula/

Good luck with your decision and happy future births!
    Cheers!
