So I need some help!
I' m a doula in training and I found out today that the mother to be tested positive for group b strep. Anyone had any experience with this, if so any advice as to how I should handle and prepare for this (besides reading about it)? Her due date is this week and I have one more prenatal visit with the couple and I want to go in there prepared for questions.
Any advice would be sooooo great!!!

blessed be
Michele :)

Not sure when you posted.. But Group-B does not need continuous iv for anti-biotics Definately get intermittent if you have to get anti., where mom can walk around...Hospital should have no problem accom. for this. Also mom does have right to refuse all and any and still keep baby after... they may cause more problems depends on hosp and careprovider and circomstance. Find out now what their protocols are. Midwifery Today has good articles on Group-b. ACog used to require 2 of 3 criteria before considering administering anti- biotis. Broken water more then 12... , PROM, temp in mom and I forget rest. Generally most hospitals give too much to often.
If you can get some Strep homeopathics.
You can watch for signs in baby after birth- High temp....you can also test baby after birth you can suggest or have mom require these things intead of giving antibiotics during labor which I think is unecessary and harmful or at the least potentially harmful.
The concern is that baby catch groupb from mom then he can't handle it gets infected then he gets pneumonea the he gets meningitis...So many women have group B in there yoni without disease or problems... most people have groupb strp on there skni... The amount of anti-biotic use is so rediculess. Chances of baby getting sick with gruopB are slim. Chances of baby getting infection from beeing sick are smaller... chances of baby getting meningitis after getting infection are slimm too.
In 2000 I got an article from my Physician about how the overuse of anti-biotics for groupb was harmful and its become even more prevalent.
